Dentro il cuore del Duomo
|
A small wooden door behind the facade of the Cathedral. A narrow spiral staircase. Along this way we climb among the mysteries of the Cathedral. The first stop is the small room containing the mechanisms of the clock, designed by Paolo Uccello. We can ssee the weight way in the back moving the hands according to the concept of meridian. Another door opens,we continue to climb until reaching the entrance of a corridor with a balustrade running along the walls inside the Cathedral. We move along this high passage discovering a new dimension of the church. There is complete silence. When we come across pilasters that link to the cross vault we have to move closer to the parapet. Below we see the decorated floor that is far off and also the people who seem small. From a small door we exit onto the external balustrade. A narrow passage turns a corner. Underneath us,about fifty meters away, lies the piazza and the Baptistery. Leaning over is not advised since the parapet i low. Now we turn back. We enter once again into the internal passage and from a different small door we enter into another staircase. Here we are in the loft of the left-wing nave. Through the openings, light enters into the loft and sheds its rays onto the dark framework of the beams. We climb again and upon reaching the loft of the central nave we become filled with emotion. We are directly under the roof as if in a ships hold,as we have already found in other constructions. But this hold is immense. We move along among the trusses.Below us is the vault of the church. We have arrived at the last stone staircase and find a type of grated door, which we open. After two more steps we are finally on the roof. From here the entire city can be seen.It is a new angle. And one of the first sites we see is Santa Maria Novella. The elevated passage way, crossed by Pope Eugenio IV, bishops and princes arriving from the Dominican Church leading to the Cathedral on the day of the consecration, must have been majestic. It was March 25,1436. There were crowds in the streets.Without the elevated passage, the Pope would not have ever been able to pass through. |
