Picture 1: Queen Vasthi, the repudiated wife of Assuero, is portrayed in the act of leaving the palace of Susa. On the left there are the severe and squared walls of the town with two high towers, and the queen, with her shoulders towards the door, is wrapped in an ample bright-pink mantle over a turquoise tunic with gilt embroidery. On the background, a landscape with thin threes and a snaky winding-out river can be observed. The whole scene is plunged into a silence full of mystery.
Picture 2: The Saint, half-length portrayed and turned by three quarters to the right, is wearing the vestments typical of a deacon: a white dalmatic with a rich braid embroidered with red geometric drawings forming the symbolic knot of Solomon. He is holding a Gospel that is covered by a light-coloured veil and with a binding decorated with gilt drawings on a red background. There are two stones on his head.
Picture 3: The Saint, wearing a cassock and probably identifiable with S. Benedict, is portrayed half-length by three-quarters on his right side. He is holding a pilgrim stick in his right hand and a book with leather "flats" in his left hand. In the middle, St. Catherine, half-length portrayed too, slightly by three quarters on her left, with a small gilt crown and a necklace, and wearing a bright-rose dress. She is holding a wheel in her right hand and a hem of her attire in her left one. St Margaret is half-length portrayed; turned by three quarters to the left, she is holding a hem of her very bright sea-blue dress in her right hand, and is showing a thin dyed red cross with her left hand. |
